Hi,

I'm in the process of moving from server 2008 to a new server with windows server 2016. I've tested several of my watch processes that print to different printers successfully.

When I try to print to one printer it doesn't work and returns error code 0x80004005 in event viewer. I can print a test page from the printer itself on the new server in devices and printers but not through planet press watch. I get the same errors when I try to print a test page through planet press watch for this one printer.

Any ideas what could be causing the problem? The setup is identical on the old server and it prints successfully though watch.

Thanks,

Morgan

Have you tried printing from another application like Word, Acrobat or Notepad?

And the driver you used, is it a Postscript one?

Also, if you print from PlanetPress Design tool, do you get the same error?

Hi Jean-Cédric,

Thanks so much for the help!

I believe my printer driver is a PCL 6, not PS. Would it work with that?

I've been trying to change the driver but I don't know how to get it to use the PS driver instead.

When I try to print from Design I get the following error:

P0015: Your printer must support PostScript LanguageLevel 3 for this option to work properly.

Thanks,

Morgan

How are you printing from PlanetPress Watch to the printer...

- Print Using a Windows Driver?
- Printer Queue Output?

If it is the former, than it should work but you will have to reconfigure your Properties so it reflects the driver currently installed.

If it is the latter, you best bet would be to install a Generic Text Driver or better yet, use LPR as you output which will bypass totally the driver used by sending directly to the printer's IP address.

As a colleague of mine pointed out, the 0x80040005 error is an Access is denied.

That would point to a user rights issue since in Watch you get the error, when printing as a service but not from a desktop application like Notepad.

If from the Design tool of PlanetPress you can do it without issue, which is a desktop application, that does point to a user rights issue.

Here's some things you could try or look at:

  • Reboot the server so proper rights are reset and propagated
  • Check if the queue you use has rights for services to use (you can check that with your IT people).

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried rebooting the server and I also changed the printer driver to a PS driver, HP Universal Printing PS, to match the live server that prints properly.

I think it's working now, I will have to wait until someone is in the office to confirm.

I got no errors in the event viewer when I ran the watch process. When I printed from notepad and from design, I got a different error, 0x5, which is also a access is denied type of error. The 0x5 error was an error for deleting a printer file in windows, but the file was deleted successfully.

Thanks for all your help!

Morgan
