I have a Ricoh Aficio 2075 printer, using
RIC20753.PPD that came with the printer. It has four input trays.

I have a job that needs some pages printed on color stock, which is located in two of the trays.

If I set input selection type by "input tray" I can pull the colored pages from the correct tray number (and the other pages are set to pull from a tray with white paper).

But in order to run unattended over the weekend, I need to use two trays for color and two for white. With selection by "input tray", it is not failing over to the other tray when the paper runs out, even though Auto Paper Select is set for all trays, and the two pairs of trays have the same paper settings on the printer.

I tried to change my PlanetPress input selection from "input tray" to "media type", but now everything is coming out on plain white. Unlike with paper tray, where the source tray becomes a drop-down menu and is PPD specific, the configuration options on media type are free form.
I have tried a couple of guesses based on how the paper type is specified on the printer, but it does not seem to work.

Any suggestions?

(I will also be contacting my printer vendor.)

The specific syntax to use with Media Types is printer dependent, so your printer vendor is indeed the right person to contact.

You may also want to look at the Advanced Paper Handling options in the pages of your document. Some PPDs will allow you to add Media Type calls through a list of specific PPD choices. But again, that's printer-dependent.

Hope that helps,

I am using the PPD supplied with the printer (on CD). It is dated 8/4/2004 and is 96 KB.

There is no other Windows PPD on the Ricoh web site. I am attempting to find a way to open the Mac OSX version to see if it is usable.

Does OL have a newer or enhanced version of this PPD?

If you go to http://www.ricoh-usa.com/downloads and pull down the latest PS driver for Windows, you'll get a newer PPD than the 8/4/04 one. I'm having trouble getting that one to do what I want it to do, but maybe it'll fix your particular problem.

We use Media Type selections on our Ricoh printers. After selecting Media Selection on the page, what are you typing in the boxes?

This depends on the model, but most of our Ricohs can be set up with Special Paper and Recycled Paper so for instance we type Special or Recycled in the Media Type box leaving the others blank. The paper type settings then need to be changed on the physical printer.

Thanks for the comments.

First, I am not using the Windows driver. I am printing from Planet Press using a PPD file.

Second, with this PPD, "media type" box is free-form, not a drop-down like tray box. I tried using "Color1" and then setting the tray to Color1 on the printer, and then main tray similarly to default, but that did not work. Entire job went to that tray, not just the pages that I had designated in Planet Press. Tried a couple of different ways of spelling it, but to no avail.

I have been using the workaround of selection by tray, and then putting the correct color paper in that tray. However, this does not give maximum flexibility of tray-switching to another tray with the same stock when one is empty.

I don't a lot about ppd's, but looking at the ppd I would suggest trying Colored1. Alternatively try using Special for example as I know that is the correct text for the Ricoh printers.
